Urdu is one of the 22 officially recognized languages in India, holding official status in the states of Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, as well as the national capital territory of Delhi. Linguistically, Urdu and Hindi share a common Indo-Aryan base, making conversational Urdu largely intelligible with informal Hindi. Together, they form what is known as Hindustani or Hindi-Urdu. However, when it comes to formal and literary language, Urdu incorporates a significant number of Persian words and grammatical structures, while Hindi draws heavily from Sanskrit for its technical and scholarly vocabulary. Urdu replaced Persian as the official administrative language of northern and northwestern British India in 1837, alongside English. Over time, religious, cultural, and political influences led to a growing distinction between Urdu and Hindi, contributing to the well-known Hindi-Urdu debate.
