Nastaliq is one of the most fluid and elegant calligraphy styles used for Arabic script. It features short vertical strokes without serifs and long, flowing horizontal strokes, creating a distinctive and graceful appearance. This script is traditionally written with a slightly carved reed pen, known as a qalam (قلم), which has a 5–10 mm (0.2–0.4 in) tip, allowing smooth ink absorption. The ink used, called si ahi, is a carbon-based black ink, enhancing the richness of the script.
There are two main types of Nastaliq calligraphy boards: Chalipa and Siyah Mashq. A Chalipa board typically consists of four diagonally arranged hemistichs (half-lines of a verse), often conveying a meaningful, elegant, or spiritual message. On the other hand, Siyah Mashq ("black practice") focuses more on composition and form rather than textual content. In this style, specific letters or words—sometimes even a single character—are repeatedly written until the entire surface is covered in ink, making the text secondary to the artistic presentation.
