The Gandharan writings are among the earliest known Asian manuscripts, primarily composed on birch bark. These ancient texts were discovered in sealed clay pots. Panini, the renowned Sanskrit grammarian, mentioned both the Vedic form of Sanskrit and what appears to be Gandhari, a later evolution of Sanskrit, in his work Ashtadhyayi.
The language of Gandhara was a Prakrit or "Middle Indo-Aryan" dialect, commonly referred to as GÄndhÄrÄ«. The language used in the Kharosthi script gradually faded around the 4th century. Modern languages such as Punjabi, Hindko, and Kohistani have evolved from the Indo-Aryan Prakrits once spoken in Gandhara and its surrounding regions. Additionally, the Gandhara script reflects the cultural influence of Iranian invaders, such as the Pashtun tribes from Central Asia, who began settling in the region.
Among the significant archaeological discoveries from Gilgit, Pakistan, were Sanskrit manuscripts, which affirm the presence of the Medicine Buddha cult in Gandhara. These manuscripts, dating back to before the 7th century, were inscribed in the upright Gupta script.
Other ancient texts, including MahÄyÄna sÅ«tras, were found on birch bark and palm leaves at the same site and are now housed in the Schøyen Collection. Some of these manuscripts are written in GÄndhÄrÄ« and use the Kharoį¹£į¹hÄ« script, while others are in Sanskrit and follow various forms of the Gupta script. The collection includes several preserved manuscripts and fragments from this ancient religious community.
